. I may have to bite the bullet and go to a Private CDL school in hopes of getting my foot in the door.
To continue your metaphor, biting that bullet may still shoot you in the foot.
A private school, basically, takes your tuition and teaches you how to drive a truck. Having a CDL does not automatically get you a trucking job, and you still have to pay off your school.
Focus on getting pre-hires , which means all things being equal a company could hire you once you do get that license.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.
We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.
The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.
During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

So, Sadly I got an e-mail this morning from Maverick. C.T. Sorry to say buddy, they will not take me into their CDL sponsorship program. My work history needs to be the past 3 years in the US and my home state DL MVR for the last year. Having been living and working in Japan since 2010 things are not looking good. So far only TMC has said they are willing to work with me on this issue as long as they can confirm work history here in Japan. I may have to bite the bullet and go to a Private CDL school in hopes of getting my foot in the door. Well still got one more year in Japan till I can move back to PA. Time to start looking for schools.
