I earned my CDL class A in 2007 and drove for a company locally for about 2 years. Over the last 9 years i have been working a desk job and feel like a monkey in a cage. I really need to get back out and behind the wheel where i feel i belong. i have kept my license valid and I have been studying the manual but i need to find anyone willing to let me drive and get comfortable with it again. any suggestions?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Not to worry, Kirk. But in 9 years, the trucking business has changed a lot. You'll probably need a full 160 hour course. Your driving skills will come back in a flash, but you'll need updates on all the other stuff.

I've been driving for two years now, and have seen these transitions: electric logs instead of paper books and auto-shifting transmissions. And a rule about 34 hour breaks is not quite settled yet. So there's lots that is new in the rules and technology.

If you're skills are good, you might be able to test out of school early. If your CDL and medical are current, I think you won't need to re-take the written test. But to update yourself, go through the High Road Training Program test prep anyway.

Thanks Errol, I took your advise on the High Road Training Program. I have an Interview with the USPS tomorrow and I just don't feel confident that they will give me a chance to show my skills. I know I can still handle it. I relive driving everyday in my mind. wish me luck and thanks for the advice.

There are companies that offer refresher training. I know Western Express is one.

Thanks Big Scott. I will check them out. I did find one company that says they offer "company paid refresher courses" I live in Denver and they say they pay for my bus ticket to MO. but man, I don't know about that. i'd really like to find something local. Thanks for the info. I will look into Western.
