Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about this without "actually" becoming a resident of either state?

Unfortunately if a company has requirements about where you can live, your license is going to have to be in one of those states. Now for years I spent time between New York and Florida but I always kept a Florida license because there is no state income tax down there. But you'll have to have a physical address in whatever state your license is in.

Honestly, there's a ton of really good companies out there to work for and they all make money the same way - keepin those wheels turnin. If you're hard working, safe, and reliable they're going to keep you rolling and you'll get along just fine at almost any company in the nation.

So don't get too hung up on any company. 95% of the happiness and success you'll have in trucking is going to be based upon your attitude and performance, not the company you work for. If it were different, I'd tell ya that. If all ya had to do was pick one of a few awesome companies, I'd list the companies and tell you to stick with those. But it isn't that way at all.

Great stuff everyone, you have no idea how helpful reading these posts are for me. Thank you. I too am interested in that company that sounds like "Pail." My problem is they dont hire from California, I need to be a resident of either AZ or NV. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about this without "actually" becoming a resident of either state? Thanks again! G MAN thank-you-2.gif

Not sure how you would get around this PO Boxes do not work as as a physical address which is required to be listed on your CDL. Now if you had a friend that lived in those states then you could ossibly use their address but it would need to be "The Address" listed on your CDL. Then you have tax filing that would be done during tax time. And lying to your company about where you live would be a big NO NO as you WILL be caught cause just a basic background check which ANYONE can do for $20 will show your place of residence as California.

Lying on your application is auto termination no matter the excuse. This is no way to start out a driving career. Just go with the companies that hire in your area and you will be ok.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

just to add to what Jax said the particular company you are looking at will check every job and every reference you provide and they wont settle for " no contact made". the particular company is interested in you living within a certain distance from one of their drop yards or terminals if you will be on hometime plus because you wont be bringing home the truck after you finish phase 3.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.
