LoL. Our inability to speak multiple languages is one of things that gives Americans a negative stigma in the world. Most Europeans speak 2-3 languages by adulthood. Take SW Germany as an example. Most people in the area speak high German (of course) as well local dialect, plus have a basic ability to speak French and English.

I went to school in Germany during my twenties - 15+ years ago. Americans stick out because they are very loud and Germans think it's odd that we smile at strangers. Yes, we are definitely behind the eight ball when it comes to languages. There are plenty of stigmas associated with Americans in European communities, many of them well-deserved.

I went to Germany as an exchange student in high school. (20+ years ago). Then again I grew up being exposed to German.

I know a 15-year old from the Netherlands who can speak Dutch, English, French, and German fluently. Translation of what I said: "I can not speak German... Translator for the win..." rofl-3.gif

As for me, it is English and English only.

I used to be fluent in German. But not speaking it regularly for decades hurts. Other than that I know basic phrases in Spanish, French, Arabic, Farsi, and Korean

I'm a Cajun, but for various reasons don't speak French. Growing up, you learn that when people start speaking French in front of you, it means they are talking about you!

That is typically how it happens. Kinda why knowing a smattering of Spanish is nearly an essential skill in the U.S. nowadays.
