Truck Stop... Its Been Too Long!

I must admit, its been about a year since I have been in a truck stop. Dispatch tossed me a bone by giving me a station that actually has a few miles on it so I got to deliver to a small gas station in Dunnigan, CA.

I couldn't resist stopping by the Flying J in Dunnigan just for fun.

It kinda sucked, I couldn't back into a parking spot because my unit has 2 pivot points so its near impossible to put it between 2 trucks so I just had to park it wherever.

Restrooms had that typical poor-diet trucker smell. Everything was still priced as if we all had a million dollars sitting in our bank. But the highlight, seeing these giant digital clocks above the fuel island that time you. I'm not quite sure what to think of them but that definitely surprised me.

Truck stops use to be a daily thing for many years. Now they are so rare. I had such a good time dealing with my nostalgia I had to capture the moment with a picture! But somehow, I feel like I'm less of a trucker.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

It is ok Daniel, we understand. You're not a OTR driver. We forgive you.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

3 years was enough for me!

Any amount of time spent on the road as a newlywed is too much time Ernie. Especially how I only came home once every 4-6 weeks. Surprised my marriage didn't disintegrate. God blessed me with a very tough woman!

You can call that a small hill all you want sir.

Man, I try to avoid truck stops like the plague. Besides the fact that I don't wanna get trapped (pulling doubles , not being conducive to backing), the smell of urine-soaked asphalt is enough of a repellent for me. Some of our meets are at truck stops, and I usually avoid picking these schedules during bid time just so I don't have to frequent one. Now, the service plazas on the Penna Turnpike - I'll visit those anytime.

Doubles:

Refers to pulling two trailers at the same time, otherwise known as "pups" or "pup trailers" because they're only about 28 feet long. However there are some states that allow doubles that are each 48 feet in length.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Daniel, you'll have to get my number from Old School. I've been wanting to chat with you for some time now. I believe you're working nights too. I'll be going back to days in about a month. Gimme a ring sometime.

Sure ill text OS for your number. Just give it some time though. When you get to OS's age you tend to sleep a heck of a lot.

Don't disturb me right now...

I just drove 655 miles - I'm going to be sleeping for a while. At least the weather here in North Carolina is conducive to a good nap - I have my windows down and am "enjoying" that unique blend of odors that rise from the pavement in a truck stop. Only a truck driver could enjoy this simple yet wonderful lifestyle!
