I honestly have no idea what it means to be certified as "Expected Interstate" but what would be the advantage in doing so? So you can avoid a 20 minute DOT physical, which you will either pass with flying colors or will inform you that you have medical problems you need to deal with?
If you're going to drive a big rig on public highways you have an enormous responsibility to the families you're sharing the highway with. You should take that responsibility seriously, and part of that is making sure that medically you're ok to drive.
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
Commercial trade, business, movement of goods or money, or transportation from one state to another, regulated by the Federal Department Of Transportation (DOT).
Ok, I just read up on the certification thing.
I always recommend the same to everyone - never limit yourself in any way with that CDL. That is literally your ticket into a driving career, which there is a very high demand for obviously. When you get your CDL , get every endorsement, and do not allow any restrictions if possible, like 'automatics only' or 'intrastate' or 'private fleet only' or any of that.
Get every endorsement and get the highest certification. Trust me, at some point in your life you'll use almost every endorsement, every privilege, and you'll be really glad you got that all out of the way in the beginning.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
The act of purchasers and sellers transacting business while keeping all transactions in a single state, without crossing state lines to do so.
I think he meant "exempted",...which by definition he is not, unless the business is a farm and the truck is a farm vehicle. I guess the thing that is not clear, are you only driving the rig in parking lots or on public roads and highways?
Please click this for a definition and the difference between exempt and non-exempt interstate commerce (scroll all the way to the top): Exempt and non-exempt self certification
Based on how you described the job, you are in a non-exempt interstate commerce scenario. You need the medical card.
The CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicle
The FMCSA was established within the Department of Transportation on January 1, 2000. Their primary mission is to prevent commercial motor vehicle-related fatalities and injuries.
What Does The FMCSA Do?

I am going for my New York State A Class CDL Permit. I think I should certify as Expected Interstate which doesn't require Medical Clearance. Here's my reason why, please correct me if I am wrong.
I am taking an unpaid internship for a private entertainment company. The rig is used to transport private equipment owned by the small business owner. The rig is owned by the small business owner. The truck will not be for hire. It is used to transport private equipment and private passengers...the owner...his kids etc. We are not using the truck to pickup and transport any people or other people's property for money at any point. We are not looking for hire. We are our own business.
The owner wants me to drive the tractor in parking lots on tour throughout the USA with him on board so I can learn. When the tour is over I will return to my home state and take the test.
Am I correctly certifying myself?
