Well...one full month as a solo driver. Some of you may have read my previous post how I was otr for two weeks and decided that wasn't for me. This last week I drove on my new dedicated route and is a much better fit! I start on Monday mornings at about 0200 and get done on Fridays about 1300.
Also, I am so much more comfortable out there! My first two weeks I was a nervous wreck . My shifting has improved emensly. Because my shifting has improved so has all the other aspects of it. Like recognising my space needed to make turns and backing, also reading and understanding my navigation system has improved as well. Using and understanding my qualcomm is becoming second nature.
I am really starting to enjoy this new career. If your new and having trouble keep plugging away and don't quit! It gets easier! Thanks! Jaybird
Dedicated Route:
A driver or carrier who transports cargo between regular, prescribed routes. Normally it means a driver will be dedicated to working for one particular customer like Walmart or Home Depot and they will only haul freight for that customer. You'll often hear drivers say something like, "I'm on the Walmart dedicated account."
OTR:
Over The Road
OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
Qualcomm:
Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.
