Well it's great you were diagnosed when you were previously unaware of it. Thank God for that! Get on those meds, watch your diet, and get some exercise. You'll be good to go!
I had never believed that losing weight and exercising would lower hypertension. But after having my hip, and then my knee replaced, my body decided that it needed to drop some weight. I lost about 45-50 pounds in a year, not by dieting, just because my metabolism decided it didn't want sugar, noodles or other carbs. So I wasn't feeling well, went into the Doctors..and he had to lower my hypertension meds...because it was keeping my blood pressure to low !! So I'm more active and on lower hypertension meds...all from losing weight....who'd a thunk it...My doctor was concerned about the weight loss..not that I didn't have it to lose..just that i hadn't dieted to lose it. But I told him that I just don't WANT sugar, or carbs anymore. Its not that I eat more salad, meat or other healthy stuff...I'm just not hungry. One's metabolism is a wonderful thing...until you have to buy a new wardrobe
Abnormally high blood pressure.

I would have!
If people who were overweight could experience what it feels like to be in great shape for even 10 seconds they would immediately get that extra weight off and start exercising. I'm already in excellent shape and I still exercise & count calories 7 days a week to keep improving.
In our society we focus a lot on how we look and a lot of people don't care that they're overweight on the premise that they don't care how they look to other people. Fair enough. I have no problem with that. But there's a much more compelling reason to be in great shape - because you feel like a million bucks! That's the part I think most people don't realize.
I always tell people that being overweight is like having a small leak in your roof. It might not seem catastrophic at the moment, but over time it causes little problems which spread into bigger problems and you ultimately wind up with this long list of major health issues that all stem from being overweight.
Abnormally high blood pressure.

Went in to get my DOT physical, found out I have high blood pressure! Not a big deal...other than High BP is considered the silent killer! So I'm very glad that this was a requirement..cuz I feel fine I have no symptoms, and would not have gone in to see a Doc. Since my school doesn't start until the first of the year(want to stay home for the Holiday's) I have time to get on some meds, and get this under control. My Doc assures me that this will not be a problem,as I have no other health issues, we'll get it under control and get the Dot done before school starts!
