Private Messaging

Ok, I think I have private messaging up and running but I need someone to test it for me. Click on my username and that will take you to my profile. You should see a sentence near the top that says "Would you like to send Brett Aquila a private message?"

Click on that, type something, and hit "send message". Then post a reply here letting me know you sent one so I can look for it. And of course if you have any problems getting that to work, let me know.

I'll let you guys and gals know how I've decided to implement private messaging - it's a bit different than most forums do it.

In most forums, there is a private area where each member basically has their own email account and you can message back and forth with people right within the forum. I didn't do it that way for a number of reasons, most notably because I didn't want to reinvent the wheel by building and implementing an entire email system within the forum. We all have email already, so I figured why not just use that?

When you send someone a private message, it will send the message directly to their email address with your own email address as the "reply to" address. That way, when they receive a private message from you they can simply reply to it as they would any other email and the reply will go straight back to your email.

Now you two can email each other to your heart's content without having to worry about going through the forum itself.

Does that make sense?

I know there will be people - possibly many people - that would prefer the traditional method of private messaging where the messaging is built directly into the forum. But I'm trying to keep the forum from being a bloated, complicated mess. Building an entire email system into it is going to be a cumbersome process which will also put a heavier load on the server and bloat the database tremendously because I would have to store every message that ever gets sent.

Soooooo, to those people who prefer the traditional way I apologize.

But now that the private messaging system is up and running I can move onto features like photo uploads, photo galleries, and allowing users to edit their own posts instead of spending the next two weeks building an email system
