I'm laying in my bunk at a service plaza about 40 miles west of Bedfrd Pennslvania. We're sitting on a load that delivers in Bedford at 1600 today. Today is my 20th day of training. It seems like I started my training with my trainer a life time ago. I was nervous when I got in his truck and we headed for the Home Depot distribution center in Salem, Oregon to pick up our first load.......I have heard horror stories about bad trainers. Fortunately, my trainer has been pretty good to me. I couldn't shift for **** for the first 4 days....instead of yelling at me my trainer kinda laughed.....told me to relax that I was like all of the other rookies. The 4th day was also the day he ran out of drive hours, so I got all the drive time. When we deliver today we'll
be over 9,000 miles (oregon to Pennsylvania twice) since I got on the truck and I've driven 90% of the time. My trainer has sat in the seat next to me the entire time I've been driving....we are not driving as a team, which has been helpful. I took it as a compliment when he fell asleep in his seat while I was driving yesterday. I figured he must be getting comfortable with my driving. In the last 20 days I've learned how to drive a truck and live on the road. My trainer says I'm ready to solo out now and scheduled my test for 12/6, but we won't be back in time. I'm not sure it matters to me anyway, because I'm not sure this lifestyle is for me. I appreciate all the information that has been posted on this site. Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!!
TWIC:
Transportation Worker Identification Credential
Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.
Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.
