Steve, I had pre-hires lined up before I had my CDL. What I did on the application is just typed "in CDL school" in that space where they ask for the number. No one had any issues with that.
I hope you are aware that you can fill out one application and have it sent to several companies all at the same time when you Apply For Truck Driving Jobs at this link.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.
We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.
The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.
During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

In NC my DL, CDLP and CDLA all have the same number.

Most states your driver license number won't change. Just the type of license. You only hold one license at a time. There isn't a separate class A and Class D that you will carry. The type of license you have will change.
Just like if you would go get a motorcycle license. You would go from having a class C (D) to have a CM (DM). Your license number doesn't change. Just the class of it.
Thanks for all your answers! Old School, that's an idea that I hadn't considered, where I just put "in CDL school" in lieu of my driver's license number. That's a great tip! And Big Scott and Patrick C., thanks for reminding me that the DL numbers won't change once I get my CDL.
Love you guys (and gals) on this forum!

I'm a bit confused about prehires. Should I try to get them while I'm in CDL training (I'm taking an accredited CDL course at my local community college) or wait until I actually have my CDL?
Earlier today, I tried to fill in an application to a company over the internet that was talking up accepting CDL graduates right out of school, but they wanted my CDL license number as part of the application. So I'm thinking,"If I'm still in CDL school, all I have is a CLP (which I haven't got yet, but will in a few days), so how am I supposed to fill in my CDL license number when I so obviously don't have one yet?"
I'm thinking that the only way around all this is to simply wait until AFTER I finish CDL school. But then again, that won't square with the "getting hired right out of CDL school" stories I keep hearing about. Can anyone help clear up my confusion?
