I'm only a 10yo trucker, but I know a lot of old timers that aren't ready to retire for what ever reasons, but they can no longer drive. Eye sight, back problems, blood pressure, what ever! What are some possible career paths a driver can go down when faced with this speed bump in life? Let's assume he/she has always been a trucker and has earned industry average income and has average life problems to deal with.

Thanks!

Would they be trying to stay with-in the industry? If they were i'm sure there's a few things they can try and do. For instance they could get into dispatch or fleet management. Or even something like a CDL school instructor if they don't mind teaching people. I'm sure there's plenty of other things that I can't think of but i'm sure it wouldn't be the end of the line.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Welcome aboard Sam!

Heavy C has some good ideas. Unfortunately trucking isn't a career that really leads to much in the way of opportunities. Teaching others to drive a truck is about the only thing I can think of where someone would actually want to hire a former truck driver. There are drivers that go into the offices of trucking companies as Heavy C mentioned, but I don't think they get much in the way of preferential treatment or special consideration because of their previous driving experience.

Driver Manager or operating Load Boards. I am sure there are other jobs in the field NOT already mentioned, but I can't think of any.

Dave

Driver Manager:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.
