Those long deadheads seem insane, but I'm sure there is some sort of profit (or at least break even) going on.

E.G. company has committed to move freight for a customer with a lot of it, and you're the closest available with available meaning there are no other loads between you and it. Gets you out of the dead zone with a surefire load.d

Just my wannabe $0.02

Deadhead:

To drive with an empty trailer. After delivering your load you will deadhead to a shipper to pick up your next load.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Just this last week, Prime deadheaded me from Orlando FL to Kansas City area for a load that went to Hazleton PA. The deadhead was 1300 miles, loaded just under 1200. Sometimes it's not that there isn't any freight, the freight doesn't pay well and so I get deadheaded to where the good freight is.

Now I will admit, this is by far the furthest I have ever had to go. But the load paid well, so there ya go.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Load planning is a complete mystery too me.. Don't know that secret hand shake and probably never will. I let the powers that be do their thing while I try and not run anybody over!!
