Can anyone explain the new tax law and per diem pay for company drivers? Also, when does this new tax law start?

Per Diem:

Getting paid per diem means getting a portion of your salary paid to you without taxes taken out. It's technically classified as a meal and expense reimbursement.

Truck drivers and others who travel for a living get large tax deductions for meal expenses. The Government set up per diem pay as a way to reimburse some of the taxes you pay with each paycheck instead of making you wait until tax filing season.

Getting per diem pay means a driver will get a larger paycheck each week but a smaller tax return at tax time.

We have a ton of information on our wiki page on per diem pay

It's a bit complicated. Here is the bottom line. Company drivers can no longer take the deduction on taxes as of 1-1-18. However companies can reimburse drivers the per diem and deduct it from there taxes. I suggest you ask your company to reimburse.

I don't know the full ins and outs of the reg. That's why I pay someone to do my taxes.

The gist of how my company explained it to us was this. Before, drivers would track their days on the road and claim them on their taxes for a lump sum yearly. Now, the company just handles the accounting, and pays us the untaxed money.

I just allow them to handle it, as it's far easier than trying to track every day down. I'll balance it out when I get my tax documents from them, and confirm it's accurate next year. It's easy to count my home days.
