What Are The Physical Qualifications For Driving A Commercial Motor Vehicle?
My brother has limited use (maybe 85-90%) of his right hand, yet he's driven a school bus for years.
A commercial motor vehicle is any vehicle used in commerce to transport passengers or property with either:
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
Ok thanks I plan on going to get the dot physical and if no issue with that then permit and on to trucking school

Im no expert not even sure if i qualify as a rookie for that matter. I was just thinking though that when you pass your dot physical it will likely be nothing more than a boost in your confidence level. I cannot think of any company that will not put you through their own physical and drug screen when they offer you a job.
Why don't you look into work that offers company sponsored CDL training that way you are guaranteed a job after.
There are a lot of companies that offer it if you commit to work for them for 6 months to a year. You want to stay with any company at least a year anyhow. Its not good to bounce from job to job.
Good luck drive safe
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
It comes down to where there is a will, there is a way. I have a laundry list of things wrong with me, thank you Uncle Sam, but I am driving truck and doing well. You may need to have your doctor sign off on stating you can perform the required tasks. This is above and beyond passing a medical exam for attaining your CLP.
Before getting their CDL, commercial drivers will receive their commercial learner's permit (CLP) upon passing the written portion of the CDL exam. They will not have to retake the written exam to get their CDL.
I have talked to two different companies that offer training and they said as long as I pass my dot physical they will not have a problem. I also found out that my Dr that I see also gives the dot physical so I shouldn't have any problems. Planning on going next week to get that done.

Went today and took my dot physical. Had no problem getting it so will be going in about 2 weeks to get my permit.

Congrats, good luck in getting your CDL.

David, keep in mind that most trucking companies will run you through a new physical when you arrive. I'm not suggesting you're not good to go, but just want you to be aware of this practice. Once you have another physical done it nullifies the previous one.

Hello I am interested in becoming a truck driver. I have limited use of my left hand. I can drive with it but cannot hold or use small things such as pencils or write with it. Now many years ago I did have a CDL class c and had my dot card. I drove a 24 ft flatbed truck for a building supply company. I did that for about 5 years. I currently work in construction now and I lift and carry things around a 100#s all day. My plan is to get my dot card and class A permit then head to trucking school. I am worried if I show up at a school and getting turned away. Would like to hear advice or opinions from some truck drivers.
