This is great! Congrats!!
This reminds me of an occasion a couple of months ago when I went to a drop yard to find an empty. I was just returning from a breakdown and didn't have a load yet...dispatch told me to go find a trailer.
Fortunately, there was an empty at the yard and it was even clean. As I was getting connected, another driver from my company got out of his truck and came over to ask me what I was up to....and I told him. He then launched into a long story - whining about a crummy load that had been sent to him which he had refused for multiple reasons. I asked him when that was....he told me early that morning...and now he had been waiting for another load for three or four hours.
I got finished hooking up and inspecting the trailer...got back in my truck just as the MDT binged and there was a nice juicy load for me...about 75 miles away and then going around 1,500 miles.
As I pulled out, I noticed the whiner was still sitting there stewing...still no load...so he had been waiting far longer than I had, but he didn't have a trip yet, and probably wouldn't get one until they *had* to give him one. Also, no layover pay for him since he had turned down a load.
My company (Pride Transport) allows us to decline loads, but I sure wouldn't recommend it. I've never turned down a trip, and I never will. I'm averaging almost 13,000 miles per month including time off - we have to take the not-so-good loads with the better loads if we want to earn the best $$$ - someone has to move those less desirable loads. I just had back to back 750 mile loads which I was getting tired of doing, but now I'm getting a 2,460 mile load put in the box, with the perfect amount of time on it - gotta love that!
It is typical of most companies. The thing is, no one can book freight so efficiently that every truck is being utilized at all times. So when they have ten loads and eleven trucks in an area, who is going to sit? It sure isn't going to be one of their top drivers, that's for sure.
And, of course, if you're trying to grow your fleet you need to have enough equipment available to take advantage of the opportunities as they come. That means things might get a little slow sometimes. Again, they're going to make their bottom performers and crybabies sit when the time comes.
Congrats, Susan, on the milestone!
Welp, today was my 2 year anniversary with West Side Transport. Life is good, the company treats me fantastic. My current trainee was shocked, because this past week was his first week on my truck and we got about 3400 miles lol. That's pretty typical miles for me so he was thrilled to see that if youre dependable and a "go to" driver there's plenty of miles and money to be made here.. oh and during training, we DO NOT team, so yeah it was a typical solo dispatch for me.
Happy Anniversary, Susan! Thank you for sharing your advice and experiences here. I always find your posts helpful.
Stay safe out there, everyone! Colin K.
