Charles E. my record is from 1981. I applied to Prime, Knight, Swift & CFI. All of them cleared me to train with them. Yes, my crimes were from a long time ago, but I was totally upfront with everyone. I also had 2 traffic infractions on my license. I went the company paid training route because it requires minimal out of pocket expense on my end. I’m guaranteed a job if I meet &/or pass all the required training courses & pasa my CDL exams.
I had my CDL in 2-3 weeks after arriving at Prime & am now driving with a trainer to learn better shifting & backing, dealing with shippers & receivers, how to work with the Qualcomm , trip planning, hours of service, etc. Basically how to handle myself on the road, on a daily basis.
I recommend you study the High Road training program & the pre-trip tutorial on here. You’ll be far ahead of your class if you do that.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
The customer who is shipping the freight. This is where the driver will pick up a load and then deliver it to the receiver or consignee.

I would fill out the applications first, Do include everything. This way if you are contacted by a recruiter it could mean that they are willing to work with you. Again though, most carriers if not all will want a completed substance abuse program before they even offer their program so that would be the first thing you should do before applying. just my opinion and I could be mistaken so hopefully the others can help me out.
