As long as you keep up with that DOT physical and submit it to your state's DMV in a timely manner (as in prior to expiration), your permit is safe. You'll still be treated as a CDL driver when it comes to violations, rules and penalties.

I stopped using my CDL in 2008 after my accident. My CDL license have been active ever since. I just renewed my DOT card this year.
In Georgia unless you surrender them they will stay active even without renewing your DOT physical.

I have my CDL but currently am not working as a truck driver and don’t plan to be for the next year or so. I’m still going to go in for my DOT physical and stuff like that I just heard from someone that you could lose your CDL and I doubted it but to be safe I’m checking with you guys on here.
