So, I've got about 10 days until I leave for training and this is one of the suggested items to have ahead of time. The company does sell these, but I think I'd rather have it ahead of time (just one less thing to pursue once I'm there.)

I've been holding and waiting (decent price versus decent shipping options) for a few weeks, but I'm coming down to my time limit on shipping. And as I've been looking around, the best purchase option for me at this moment is the 2017 (spiral bound) version. I can have it in a day or two for about $20.

I know that things can change from time to time, and even sometimes practically overnight. But is there going to be a huge difference between the 2018 and the 2017 version of this? I'm trying to save a few bucks because that's a few more I can take with me. But I don't want to save money now if it's just going to cost me time or headache later on.

Thanks!

(The 2019 version doesn't come out until June.)

DAC:

Drive-A-Check Report

A truck drivers DAC report will contain detailed information about their job history of the last 10 years as a CDL driver (as required by the DOT).

It may also contain your criminal history, drug test results, DOT infractions and accident history. The program is strictly voluntary from a company standpoint, but most of the medium-to-large carriers will participate.

Most trucking companies use DAC reports as part of their hiring and background check process. It is extremely important that drivers verify that the information contained in it is correct, and have it fixed if it's not.

You're good - Go for it!

That's a good price.

Thanks, Old School. I'll go ahead and pull the trigger on the 2017 edition.

Go to the Rand McNally online Store. 2019 has been released already.

I stand corrected the motor carriers isn't out yet, just scrolled thru the entire list of 2019. You're right it is June. But Rand McNally store has great deals.

Thanks, Patrick. Thing is, I think I need the Motor Carriers version for class. Plus, lots of people seem to recommend getting the spiral-bound version for ease of use in the truck (if I get that far.) Plus, I was looking at the 2018 version on their site, but shipping time doesn't come with any guarantees - I should have addressed this issue long ago and I wouldn't be trapped by time constraints now. Poor planning on my part.

If you can't but a spiral bound book, I have gotten many books spiral bound at fedex for a very reasonable cost, and generally they do it while I wait. I would say the largest book has been about 250(ish) pages, and no issues.

Jeremy, give us updates on how your training goes. It'll give me something to read while I wait for my schooling to start in 22 days!

Well, Army, that's one resource I never knew existed! I've got some other stuff at home that I used to take camping/hiking that I had to buy for a second or third time after breaking the spine or just cutting out pages for convienence. Wish I had know about this long ago.

I definitely plan on starting a diary here on the site. Seems like the least I can do after all I've learned here and and all of the Truth I've encountered here about trucking. I was suffering from a serious cranial-rectal-inversion before I started reading here. So, I'm sort of obligated to try giving something back for the next person that comes along.

Keep after it and maybe we'll both have CDL's within the next month or so!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.
