5/1, Day 2. This morning we had a quiz on Accidents prevention/safety, the spent time reviewing homework for HOS and BASICS/CSA. After that it was more practice on the simulators practicing up/downshifting. Then it was lunch.
After lunch, 1/2 of the class went out to learn the pre-trip while the other 1/ continued practicing shifting. Then the groups switched. My shifting has improved to where I am much smoother. Just when I think "I got this", I hear......grrriinnddd.....grind......on my downshifting in the high gears. Still, much better. I hope so because tomorrow we are being tested and need to pass to move on to the tractors. Tonight, I will be practicing the pre-trip and then study for a quiz on visual aspects of driving. Another positive day.
The CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicle
Steady progress is all you need. Everyone does the gear grinding when they start. You'll get it, just takes time and lots of shifting.
Glad you're doing so well. Good luck.
Thanks, Scott. Hopefully, I will be consistant during the two phases of the shifting test and make very few mistakes. I really appreciate the tips from Richard (instructor). He is very easy going.
Glad you're doing so well. Good luck.
Find your rhythm Don...take your time and learn the "one-two" count. Music to the ears of a gear jammer.
Take your time and try not to rush your shifts. You'll get it...no doubt.
Good luck tomorrow.
G-town, the instructors encouraged us yesterday to shift as smooth and as soft as possible using similar methods, but replacing 1-2 with the words "double.....clutch..." and worry about speed later. That helped me greatly both yesterday and today.

Hey Don, just getting caught up on reading. It's been an interesting few days back here in reality.
And after watching the Tribe dump another game tonight to Texas... Well, your diary has brought a depressing night back to happy again!
Keep rocking it, brother. The road is a calling!
The CAVs won though.

Day 1 is complete. We watched videos on Safety, HOS and Accident prevention in the morning. Then had lunch. After lunch we spent the afternoon working on upshifting on the simulators. It took a couple times through before I started to improve. Richard (instructor) gave us a couple tips on how to get our shifts and footwork in synch for smoother shifts. After he did that, I did SO much better and more confident going through the upshifting sequence. I took every opportunity to practice over and over and also kept paying attention as he continued teaching others, so as to reinforce in my mind what I was doing right and improve on what was needed. We have some homework on H.O.S. and need to watch the pre-trip video to prepare for our first day on it tomorrow. A great first day. Good night.
