Plenty of companies will pay for your CDL and give you a job and the all important year of experience. In fact this site generally encourages you to go with company paid training. I worked for CRST and I went to a branch of their school. It wasn't a bad gig, I enjoyed the experience. We currently have a lead driver with them on here and surely he will chime in.
If you have goals and are there to work they will see that. I wanted to make money and not sit around and whine. So after a little time I was getting good miles and even favor type loads.

Joe, that link above is for the CRST Training program. I would make sure they’re not going to need you to take the permit test in the state you’ll be training in. I jumped the gun & paid for my DOT physical for nothing cause Prime required me to retake my physical with them. I would look up any other companies training program in that section & the different diaries for each company to have a better idea of what’s in store & what to expect. That’s what helped me decide on my present company. Good luck!

Greetings! I'm in my third week of training here at CRST in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. If I can help with any specific questions, then I will.
Another member here named MillionMiler is a Lead Driver (driver/trainer that trains new CDL holders out on the road for their first month) for CRST and he can probably answer more than me.
As for getting your permit first, you will want to talk to a recruiter first before doing anything. Used to be it wouldn't do you any good because you needed to take it here in Iowa. But... Within the last week something changed and they have been letting out-of-state permits come through the program.
So, right now only a recruiter can answer that question. There might be special circumstances or last week may have been an exception for some other reason.
But if I can answer anything else, just let me know. Also, there are some training diaries here on the site packed with information about training here at CRST (mine included) located in the Training Diaries section of the forum here.

I’m in the process of getting my cdl permit before school. I was told that it was a smarter choice to have before I sign with anyone. But my real question is what is CRST like. What should I expect, school and after. Just looking at that I’m making the right choice as this is going to effect not only myself but my family. Thank you for your time and answers.
