I finished the Swift Driving Academy in Phoenix Az. Friday and I now have my CDL! Overall it was a great learning experience and I would like to thank Brett and the others here at Trucking Truth for everything. Thanks to the High Road training program and CDL practice tests, I arrived at the academy prepared and ahead of the curve. I would also recommend Swift Academy to any prospective drivers, especially veterans, because they are very veteran friendly there. Again, Thank you to Brett and the staff of Trucking Truth for allowing me to be prepared ahead of time, and setting me up for success in the Swift Driving Academy!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I will definitely try to be on my best game for sure. I start orientation Jan. 6 then OTR for my 240 hrs. after that. I will keep you guys posted on my progress and i'll share anything I think would be helpful to others that I experience along the way.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Congrats Brett! That's awesome news. We get a ton of great feedback about Swift and you're yet another one who really seems to like the way they run their academy so that's great to hear!

Definitely looking forward to hearing how things go for you once you head out on the road!

Congratulations Brett! dancing-dog.gifdancing-dog.gif

I'm starting the Swift Driving Academy in Lewiston, ID on Jan 6th. I know it's a different school but I suspect the curriculum is the same. Any tips you could give me would be very much appreciated (what they stress, really push you to know, ext).

Were you able to find your own trainer or did they assign one to you?

Any info you could give me to be more prepared would help me out tremendously. thank-you.gif

Good luck with your trainer, and let us know how you are doing.good-luck.gif

Daniel I just went solo with swift about a month ago and no your not able to find or pick your own trainer unless you have a relative or family member that mentor certified then you can request.

As far as the academy when your in the classroom the first 2 -3 days take all the notes you possibly can because your going to take about 6-7 tests that coming Sunday including a hazmat test that Swift requires you to take but they don't make you get the endorsement. For all the tests you can use your notes and book and same with hazmat. So take good notes. Start studying your pre trip that's huge. During your first week you have 2-3 days to get straight line backing down then you test out of that. The next week once you pass the tests you have to knock out your blind and sight side parallels, offsets and 90 degree. Then once you knock those out you get with your road instructor. You spend a week with them driving wherever they tell you too.

That's how they did it down here in Texas and I assume that's how they would do it at the other academies but you know what they say about assuming.

If you have any other questions you can send me a private message or heck even call me it don't bother me.

Finally glad to see some more Swifties poppin up in here

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Thanks Logan. Will do. I plan on taking my WA state HM test next Tuesday. The pre-trip is bugging me mostly because I have no way to get to a truck to see it first hand and I learn easiest by doing and seeing. I guess self imposed after hours training will be in order.

As far as the trainer goes I'll hope for the best but first things first. Jan 6th. Then Jan 7th.

I will do as you say and take notes. I'm the secretary for a tractor club so that part should be easier for me than most others. Open book tests will do me good.

OMG I'm so nervous and I don't even start for 2 weeks.
