There's a brand of 12 volt coolers with a real compressor that you can set to be used as a refrigerator or freezer. "Dometic" is the name. If you'll go to Amazon and do a search for "Dometic 12 volt refrigerator" you should find the various models. These are on the high end of the price range, but they are built extremely well and have proven to be much more durable than most of the others.
I use a dorm fridge from Wal-Mart and an inverter.

Same. I actually bought a bigger one that prime sells but returned it when a driver offered me the Walmart one for $40 plus his microwave for $10. I ran back to the Prime company store & returned their $225 model. It is bigger but $40 is a huge difference. They both have small freezers.
Used thermocoolers for awhile.
Great for cooling drinks, but thats it. Just got a mini fridge and its strapped to my top bunk. Plugged into my inverter.
It probably paid itself off in three weeks.
I have a Dometic portable freezer. I bought it 2 years ago and absolutely love it. It can be used as a fridge or a freezer, is extremely quiet, reliable, and I wouldn't have anything else.
