Can anyone tell me if having difficulties with reading and writing is a huge issue when it comes to learning to be a truck driver? My husband is not by any means dumb, but he does have challenges when it comes to reading and writing, if he can build hospitals, jails, etc then he most likely can drive a truck, I'm just worried about the class work, and wonder if they have resources available when a person cannot easily do book work? thanks so much for all of the support and advice i have received thus far...this group of people is amazing! I am so impressed :) Doxy

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Shouldn't be a big deal some schools are slow paced and give ya help where its needed,I have a sleep disorder when I get bored I go to sleep that's why I don't have my hazmat yet I slept through it in school and still got a GPA of 87% ,hazmat was 50% of our class grading but from the rest to my performance on the driving pad I made up for it.

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

I am ADHD and it took me a bit longer than others but I got it. There will be alot of classroom work, and yes reading, but they will help him to the best of their abilitys. He just needs to show them how bad he wants it or they will focus their attentions on others. He can do it. P.S. DOXY I ANSWERED YOU ON MY CR ENGLAND POST.

O and Doxy make sure he remebers a few thing. Pay attention, and dont overthink anything. That was were my ADHD got the best of me. I would overthink everything. That was my ultament downfall.

Well he will of course have to learn the CDL manual and logbook rules well enough to pass the exams, and he has to be able to read road signs. He will also have to be able to communicate through the Qualcomm with dispatch, which is basically an email system so he has to be able to read and write well enough to be understood.

A huge advantage he will have to help him is our High Road Training Program. He can take all the time he needs to go through that course from beginning to end and learn it inside and out. I'm certain that will make a tremendous difference for him.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Logbook:

A written or electronic record of a driver's duty status which must be maintained at all times. The driver records the amount of time spent driving, on-duty not driving, in the sleeper berth, or off duty. The enforcement of the Hours Of Service Rules (HOS) are based upon the entries put in a driver's logbook.

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.

Thanks to Pebbles and Brett! ;) I hope i did not make him out to sound like a mentaly retarded individual, lol. He can read and comprehend commercial building blueprints, so if he can do that, I feel confident he can do truck driving and the material required, he just gets nervous they will not understand if he doesn't go in there and get it all perfect. I think it would be fairly safe to say he is adh ( like Pebbles, bless your heart )_ just has never gotten officiel dx from a dr. I also wanted to interject, that i quizzed him on the first 5 general test questions, and out of about 100 ?'s he got approx 97 of them correct....honestly, i think he needs to calm the freak down and relax just a tad, i really think he has got this!:) "OR SO I HOPE" tee hee:) Thx again to my new truck driving friends... I really like you all here :)
