Hi guys, this may be a dumb question but I'm asking anyway...Is the D.O.T. physical one of the very first things you do during driver training? I would think that'd be something they'd get out of the way early before investing time in potentionally unqualified candidates. I'm 2 years into recovery from a stroke and believe I can pass the physical with no problems, but i won't be completely comfortable until it is behind me

It really all depends on the program and how they run it.

But when I was in school we had the physical done at the end when we passed all our tests but before we got our CDL and trainer. I imagine that a lot of schools do it at the very beginning along with the drug test. Call your school and find out for an exact answer.

I would recommend you get yourself a DOT physical before schooling if you're worried about it. They don't cost too much and they aren't difficult to find. That way you can know for sure.

I do apologize for not giving you a straight answer, but the truth is that not every program is the same. Essentially, they get you to your goal. But some do it in different steps. So it really all depends on your program and how they like to run it.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Keith, this is generally done on the first day or no later than the second day. Don't worry with it too much - I think you'll be fine.

Keith, you can also get a physical on your own if you like. You'll have to pay for it yourself and it won't be valid for starting a new job - you'll still need another one - but at least you'll know you can pass it. Any hospital and some doctor's offices give DOT physicals and they're normally well under $100. It's worth considering if you have the money and you're really concerned about it.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Need to remember that DOT physicals after May 2014 need to be done by a DOT Certified Physician. You can locate them on the FMSCA web page.

Fm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.
