Hey Doug, I am also currently a local driver in Denver making about the same as you are, just without the overtime. I figured it up, and with overtime you're making around 60k a year right? You can definitely make at least that over the road and probably much more depending on where you go. I haven't looked much at other companies lately, but I know at mine (American Furniture Warehouse) our otr drivers bring in at least 70k a year and are home every week. I know firsthand because I used to drive otr for them and switched to local after several months.
OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Hey folks. Just want your input. I am a local CDL Driver for a building supply company near Denver. I currently make $22.00 an hour. I like the job and often get more than 10 hours of overtime a week, however I miss being on the road. I am driving the same roads every day locally and thinking about going OTR. Am I crazy?? Just y’all thoughts on if I’d even be able to make close to that per week??
I am not a driver, but from all I have read here (a LOT :) ), I would say yes, but not in 50 hours or less. :)

Thanks for your reply. I’m happy with where I’m at however would love to get back on the road instead of driving the same route every day. Call me crazy but I like the open road. Lol
Is family time gonna be an issue? You can do whatever you want and whether or not we think you’re crazy doesn’t matter.
What DOES matter is what you want, that will fit in with your responsibilities.
