Grumpy, I spoke with a driver for Ryder one day, on CB, and asked him. His load, and most of the Ryder powered ones according to him, are steel coils for the auto industry. The top opens and they crane the coils in, side doors for inspection and access for securement.
I was losing my mind on it, and finally found a driver with a CB that would answer. He was out of Detroit, ran dedicated to and fro somewhere along the Mississippi, can't remember where he was coming from, but we chatted for about 30 minutes E/B I-80 from Quad Cities...
Yes, another driver said he had seen steel coils on them as well.
Grumpy- Great find and interesting article!
Thanks. I'm just glad I finally found out, I've been searching on and off for about 3 years.

We haul aluminum coils, ingots and shredded aluminum scrap in them. Doors are for checking chains and the solid side walls are to hold the scrap.
They have "D" rings inbeded in the floor for securing Steel Coils. Doors open inward to access different areas of the Trailer.
Nice thread Grumpy. Very cool trailer!

Thanks. I am fascinated with it now. Evidently it is used for steel coils, aluminum coils, ingots, etc. Keeps the supply line running, they drop off finished producut, pick up the scrap in the same trailer for the return trip, rinse and repeat.
This particular one runs from Dearborn to Oswego. Sounds like a nice run.
