Well gang I'm moving on. I accepted a job with Black Horse Carriers to run doubles from Portland to Hartford. Finally gonna be getting that schedule I've been wanting. Monday through Friday no holidays. Running line haul is about as easy as it gets and for the money you almost can't beat it. Time to get away from the grocery biz. Do we got ant Black Horse drivers here?

Line Haul:

Linehaul drivers will normally run loads from terminal to terminal for LTL (Less than Truckload) companies.

LTL (Less Than Truckload) carriers will have Linehaul drivers and P&D drivers. The P&D drivers will deliver loads locally from the terminal and pick up loads returning them to the terminal. Linehaul drivers will then run truckloads from terminal to terminal.

Doubles:

Refers to pulling two trailers at the same time, otherwise known as "pups" or "pup trailers" because they're only about 28 feet long. However there are some states that allow doubles that are each 48 feet in length.

Congratulations! Welcome to the linehaul family. I see Black Horse in the Chicago area every day they have nice looking equipment. I know around here they deliver to the Aldi stores

According to a guy I met a few years back that worked for them, Black Horse was founded out of a family operation by a Vietnam Vet who served with the Black Horse over there. They are veteran friendly, and no bs - the owner mr. Neidert was a ballbuster that expected excellence and absolute honesty.

Not sure how much Mr. Niedert is still involved in the operations, but the guy I talked to (a veteran also) was complimentary in his assessment of working for them. This discussion was after I got my CDL , but before I started driving, so somewhat dated.

As Bobcat says, in ChiMetro, they are the dedicated delivery for Aldi Foods, and if you don't know about them, they are a lean mean money making grocery machine. They also run general consumer freight, but here the bulk of their stuff is grocery, albeit dedicated to one operation.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Thanks guys. Yeah the owner is still involved heavily. In fact I'll be meeting him during my orientation. The equipment is going to be very nice. All brand new. Tractor, Pups and dolly. My linehaul will be pulling Parts for GM dealerships. No grocery for me anymore.
