My buddy Kenny wants to become a semi driver he's 20 now. His birthday is July 1st. I am wondering if he can get started with a company training program 3 weeks prior to June 1st since most programs are 3 weeks. since legally we can renew our CDL's or a regular License 30 days before our birthday. Main thing is can he get the temp package being he's 20 not 21 yet.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

He could start contacting companies, and asking...it wouldn't hurt at all. Some companies insurance has a limit of no one under 23 yrs old. But there are alot of companies who have the 21 yr old limit. So tell him to start talking to them !! And he needs to come in here and do the High Road Training thing...it will get him WAY ahead of anyone in his class. AND he can get his permit, and endorsements prior to going to school, if thats how the school is set up. But by all means, tell him to start calling recruiters.......

And WELCOME !! to you both !!! You've come to the right place to get the right answers to any questions.
