I have a question about my medical certificate. The doctor only gave me a 3 month card because my bp was high. So when I got to cdl school (central ref) they told me that the next one I get has to be for atleast a year if not they would let me go. So my question is if I can't get one for longer will that keep me from getting a job with another company? Right now I'm out with my trainer and I eat as healthy as I can but its hard to do sometimes. I upgrade next week and I have a doctor appt set up for when I get home but I'm worried that I won't be able to get it down before I have to do the medical exam again.

I have BP issues also,I had a stroke in 2011 and I'm starting school to get back on the road in a little over a week, what I started doing after i got rejected at a red cross blood drive last year is doubling my dose of BP meds in the morning when I have an exam coming. I know it's not right but I have every intention of continuing. just something to think about :)

Welcome aboard Bobby!

Seriously, the entire trucking industry runs on blood pressure meds and coffee. It's no big deal at all. Have your doctor hook you up with a solid prescription that is suitable for commercial driving and you'll be good to go.

As far as Keith's suggestions - I can't condone that publicly of course, but I am in the camp of "do what you have to do to be successful in this world" (except compromise your ethics and integrity of course) so I would probably do the same thing.

But you should have no problem getting that blood pressure down with the right prescription and get at least a one year card.

I should have been more precise with my comment, my usual daily routine includes BP meds every 8 hours, when I want to be extra sure my pressure is ok for an exam I combine the morning and mid-afternoon doses in the morning then skip the mid-afternoon, that way I'm getting the same daily amount as prescribed but not exactly as prescribed. I know a healthcare professional would tell me I shouldn't do this but they would also tell me not to drive all day every day on next to no sleep, fueled by caffiene and junk food and y'all know you do that ;)
