Hi. You guys (& ladies) have been great. This has been crazy.

I am drawing the last of my MS unemployment. I found out the day after Christmas that I qualify for WIA (Workforce Investment Act). I've been checking out the field because WIA only pays once in a person's lifetime. So if you don't complete the program / get disqualified / kicked out --that's it.

I was looking at the CDL training because my husband has his CDL's. He's in TX helping his dad (sick). [We are really from Texas--no offense to beautiful MS.]

He's been telling me to get CDL's and he will "cover for me" in team driving. He Is A Fantastically GREAT, natural driver. Really. [Note: No drugs]. He got his CDL from a similar program in TX years back and really aced the private training. But his OTR experience has been bumpy.

My driving record is clear. No tickets, no accidents, no DUI's, no drug or probation issues. --But I've been driving something the size of a pocket book all my life. And then I still lose hub caps from cutting too close to things.

The questions abt BMI--I found out from the training school Thurs, 2 JAN that BMI was not passed for DOT in 2014 but sleep apnea (neck girth) was. My husband has health issues. I would squeak by and pass BMI by losing 11 lbs. He would have to lose 50 lbs to look good on paper. He also has sleep apnea issues.

We are just working things out & know we have to be guided by God (but doing is a lot harder than saying).

He would not want me to plaster this all over the internet. And that's for me, too. But keeping our mouths shut will not get some of this answered. Maybe someone else reading this can be helped & saved from asking the same.

These are exciting ==> Scary Times. In my career field, we know the body reads adrenalin from excitement the same whether it's "fun stress" or "fear stress." Just have to keep looking at the Fun aspect.

I'm having Lots of Fun.

Thanks for the support. May check back with you all.

God keep you Safe.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Sleep Apnea:

A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.

In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.

It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.

BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

I feel out of the loop on the BMI , sleep apnea thing... I thought I was ok when they didn't push the BMI restrictions thru(i would've been in trouble with that, don't know what my BMI is but I know it's BAD) I heard recently that some companies are requiring drivers to have sleep studies done(at the driver's expense)in order to keep their jobs, that has me kinda worried,I think i remember seeing something about probable apnea(maybe just because I was such a fat slob)in my records when I got out of the hospital after my stroke but I don't remember them doing any testing.

Hey Niki. To be honest, I'm not sure what your question is. Can you clarify please?

He's been telling me to get CDL's and he will "cover for me" in team driving

And I don't know what that means either but it sounds a bit scary.

I'm betting it means he'll do all the driving, he just needs her logbook to make it look good, I'd do the same thing in that situation:)

My take on the BMI and Sleep Apnea thing is pretty simple. Since the BMI thing didn't go thru, don't worry about it...BUT let it be a heads up...because it WILL become an issue. If you are grossly overweight, you CAN"T be healthy/sleeping well/ blood pressure within limits under physical stress, etc. Truckers are over weight because they "convenience eat", and lack of exercise. And in this day and age, theres really no excuse for it. A little planning, and you can eat healthier, and find time to burn some calories. Now the Sleep Apnea thing...its a little different. A person who doesn't rest adequately, and doesn't know it, will be amazed at how good they will feel after they have had a good night's sleep, with adequate O2 intake. I know the machine and the maks is a pain...but if I could trade waking up and feeling rested and energized for getting used to wearing a mask...I'd do it in a heartbeat !!! I don't have sleep apnea...so when I wake up feeling like crap......I have to blame it on TSB !!!

I got one of these because my snoring kept my wife awake. http://tapintosleep.com/products/

It can be prescribed for sleep apnea , although I don't have that problem. The thing about it is that it really does help you get a better night's sleep. My dentist robbed me on the fitting fee, but you can get deals on it.

Actualyy, it was an oral surgeon that set me up with it, not a regular dentist.
