I am planning on going to Missouri for Prime's CDL School. Although not required I want to get my permit before I go. so if i get my permit in my home state Tennessee, will that be valid in Missouri?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Hi Joshua...Jeff (my bf) is there now, testing out. He had his permit (from NC) when he arrived, if I'm not mistaken they transferred it. From going through this experience with him and listening to him, I would recommend getting your permit first although its not required, but it does save a few steps. But just remember to get it in enough time that you will have the actual permit in hand. Jeff's original permit had expired JUST as he was getting ready to go and had to get another and the permit card came in the mail JUST IN THE NICK OF TIME!!

Some excellent advice I will give you....read everything on this site and especially The High Road Training Program that Brett has provided. It will help you to no end!! Not to mention there are some really AWESOME folks on this site that will help you with anything!

PS.....make sure you HAVE ALL REQUIRED DOCUMENTS, be extremely honest on your app, and check your blood pressure....they will send you home. High Blood Pressure will def get you sent home!!

Hey Free Spirit, I am in NC as well. How long did it take for it to come in the mail? I am planning on going to Prime as well.

One thing that causes lots of grief for folks when they get to Prime is not having the correct documents. The one item they are very picky about is having the certificate of live birth, not your birth certificate.

They will tell you 7 - 10 business days. It arrived in the mail on the 8th day, but please do not procrastinate....snail mail....things can happen. I think its called "life" ...hahaha!!

Also, if you can not remember dates of jobs, or DMV history, it probably would not hurt to go to a Private Investigator, pay a small fee to get the goods on your life....THE GOVERNMENT KNOWS WHAT COLOR UNDERWEAR YOU WORE 10 YEARS AGO!!!

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.
