Hello, Jack. It sounds like you need to connect directly to the truck battery, and not use the 12v "cigarette lighter" socket in the truck. Most US trucking companies do not condone direct battery connections, so you should check with the truck owner about this.
The batteries are often located below or behind the cab, and additional wiring should be done by a professional. Bad wiring in this situation could cause a fire, and I wouldn't want to be the one to blame for that.
The inverter instructions should suggest cable sizes and lengths for your situation.
You really should have it hard wired to the batteries. Alligator clips are not a very good connection and are likely to generate heat. I've seen several trucks catch on fire due to faulty inverter installations. If you're not confident in your method, I'd recommend a professional mechanic to install it for you.
Hard wired is the only way to go. Anything less is asking for trouble. BUT ya gotta check with the company whether or not this ok. I have a 2500 watt inverter to run my coffee pot and microwave and it works great. But I've got the biggest wire I could fit in the inverter connection running directly to the battery. 500 watt might work in the cigarette lighter. Not sure.try it and see. I also have a 350 watt just plugged into the cigarette lighter. I use that for my laptop and to recharge my electric shaver.

So i got myself a 500 watt 12v inverter to run my ps3 and tv, i tested it with my car battery and it powers the tv and ps3 fine. so i'm planning to run it straight to one of the lorry batterys and running cables from the battery into the cab.
so my questions are 1.does all this sound ok? 2.and how many metres and what cable should i use? and its a renault magnum is anyone would know the distance to the batteries?? 3.are just using crocodile clips ok?
cheers for any help!
