We have gotten at least one message from safety for each storm that has come through so far this season. All of the say "If you feel it's not safe, then park and update your DM. No load is worth life or anyone else's life." I think we have gotten 1 message each of the last three days, as this storm crosses.
You posted this and while i was reading it this came across...
I was searching for this thread last week.
I was driving along in whiteout conditions, sitting in traffic for a semi that had rear ended a flatbed, when this came over the QC.
It took 8 hours to go from Niagara Falls to Dunkirk, get loaded (2 hours) then make it to Pembroke. Travel time was about double normal travel times due to the snow. The rest was sitting for the accident.
I messaged my dispatcher and told him I was hearing on the cb that it cleared at Batavia, if it did I would continue on, and if not I would shut down at Waterloo. His response was sounds good, just stay safe.
It turned out it didn’t clear until Waterloo but once there it was blue skies and dry roads. I made it to Fultonville before running out of hours.
I was 1 hour late to my appointment the next morning because of my clock. I left as early as possible but simply didn’t have the hours to get there earlier. I then ran like mad to get back on schedule by the next morning.
But the end result was no one was upset about me being late.

Dm:
Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager
The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.
