I try to keep my logs very tight and save every spare minute I can for driving. It really bites when you're trying to get home after a long hard week and due to a traffic jam or whatever, you get delayed and come up 20 minutes short from home and have to park and take a 10 hour break to be able to make it home without violating your HOS. And YES, I've had this happen during my first rookie year lol. I was on the Gene Snyder in Louisville headed for 31W to get home by Fort Knox. Had to actually pull off on a ramp and up to the get on side and park for a break in a sketchy area. I let my company know where I was parked, and why. It's never a good idea, security wise to park where no other trucks are, and particularly on a secluded ramp area. I noticed homeless? people milling around the woods very near my truck too. I called Louisville Metro non emergency number to let them know I was there, why, what type of load I had, and that I was feeling a little uneasy. They had officers come by and check on me every few hours while I was stuck there attempting to try to get at least some sleep.. they ran off the people hovering in the woods too near to my truck.
Sometimes an extra 10 or 20 minutes can get you safely to your next customer where they may allow parking for a 10 hour break, a truck stop, or whatever. Make every minute count.. you'll be glad you did at some point, I promise.
