Some of the companies I am talking to wants me to have my permit ahead of time. No problem. My state, Connecticut, requires a DoT Medical Card to get permit, again no problem. So I am going to get the physical next week so if I have any surprises like high blood pressure (okay not so surpriseing) to give meds time to recertify.
Now my question is if I get my permit in CT and go to school in PA do I have to come back to CT for the skills test or does the states have to accept the skill test from state you go to school in?
Let me guess I should call the CT DMV 🤨
I'm in the same boat you are and I've asked a few companies this question and received different answers. Some say they want me to come back to Michigan after receiving a CDL in their state and transfer the CDL but others told me I'd have to use their business address for the CDL in their state. On that second point I am assuming I'd have to transfer the CDL to Michigan at some point in the future but according to them it didn't have to be done right away.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.
I forgot something, I wish we could edit here. This may vary by state but in Michigan I can transfer a valid CDL without taking a road test as long as I'm not upgrading or removing a restriction.

I can only speak for Indiana but i had to get my DOT physical prior to getting my cdl permit. Make sure you put that you are a CDL permit/ or license applicant or holder on your paperwork for the physical ( I screwed this up and it was a headache) Once that is done you can take your CDL permit test with any endorsements you need. Make sure you get an INTERSTATE not intrAstate so that you are legal to operate outside your state. My training will be out of state and I will test out of state. Im actually not sure how this works but Ive been told it does. If i pass i can have it transferred over to my home state.

Commercial trade, business, movement of goods or money, or transportation from one state to another, regulated by the Federal Department Of Transportation (DOT).
The act of purchasers and sellers transacting business while keeping all transactions in a single state, without crossing state lines to do so.
A truck drivers DAC report will contain detailed information about their job history of the last 10 years as a CDL driver (as required by the DOT).
It may also contain your criminal history, drug test results, DOT infractions and accident history. The program is strictly voluntary from a company standpoint, but most of the medium-to-large carriers will participate.
Most trucking companies use DAC reports as part of their hiring and background check process. It is extremely important that drivers verify that the information contained in it is correct, and have it fixed if it's not.
Hi Will,
I JUST went through this in CA. The medical first, permit and endorsement test next and schedule with training company for class start last. Basically, in the fine print, there is a category of certified trainers and examiners (company sponsored training companies) allowed to perform tests in other states that will transfer back to your state (minus Illinois I think, they're requiring you to still take skills when you return).
So after doing the skills, backing and pre trip final exams, the results would be wired back. However I still have to "finalize" my license in person at a commercial dmv center at some point to receive my physical license.
But as usual, contact your friendly local DMV personnel for your specific circumstances:)
It was agonizing when I initially passed and asked the DMV person about this. They looked at me like a foot was growing out of my forehead. Thought I had to re test here but a phone call later to the correct office confirmed the above.

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.
The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.
If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.
Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.
Operating While Intoxicated
With CFI, I had to get my DOT physical and permit before they would accept my into school. They sent me to school in Missouri, where I passed my CDL test. After I upgraded they sent me home, to NC, to get my actual CDL. All I had to do was go to the DMV , pay the fee and get a temp CDL while the permanent one was mailed to my house.
Once I passed the test, while still at school in Missouri, I called the NC DMV to confirm that they got my scores from Missouri. That saved me a ton of potential headaches. Good luck.

I was told by my CRST recruiter to get my physical and permit here in Minnesota before coming to school. The DMV testing center told me that even though I obtain my permit here it would be fine to obtain the actual CDL in Iowa.
