Ok so the CDL manual says:
You need at least 4/32-inch tread depth in every major groove on front wheels and 2/32-inch depth on other tires. No fabric should show through the tread or sidewall.
In another section of the CDL manual it says:
Check for minimum tread depth (4/32-inch on steering axle tires, 2/32-inch on all other tires)
So the steer tires need 4/32, all other tires need 2/32. The question you're referring to (it's on page 7 of the High Road Training Program) says:
What is the minimum amount of tread depth allowed for drive and trailer tires?
The correct answer is 2/32.
So the manual doesn't say drive tires need to be 4/32. They say steer tires have to be 4/32 and all other tires 2/32.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
Your mind is missing the word MINIMUM in the question. 2/32 is the absolutely loowest tread depth allowed by law on trailer tires and must be changed before it gets any lower.
The maintenance department will say it needs to be changed at 4/32 to avoid any hassle with dot.
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
Just for clarification, your drive tires and steer tires are two different sets of tires. I think that wording may be tripping you up.
Yeah I realized my mistake after rereading it four more times. Guess I used to driving front wheel drive vehicles! When I say drive tires it made me think front tires. ROFL! Amazing how your brain can get stuck in one thought path. Thanks for the help!

This question stumps me every time I see it during the course:
What is the minimum amount of tread depth allowed for drive and trailer tires?
I always answer: 4/32 and it says it should be 2/32.
The reason I always think this is because of the wording of the question. It says drive and trailer tires. The manual says drive tires should be no less than 4/32 and trailer tires no less than 2/32. So, if it says drive (4/32) and trailer (2/32) tires, my brain thinks ok take the highest of the two which is 4/32. Why is my thinking wrong on this?
