It is a business not just an employment. I know owner operators who are successful, but they are owner operators, not lease operators. They have their own truck and they don't have to lease a truck. If I went this path, I would remain a company driver until I have enough money to buy my own truck and then maybe become an independent contractor for a trucking company or be on my own. I know someone who has his own truck with a gondola trailer. He now hauls scrap metal to commercial metal companies (junk yards) to sell them and he gets the price per weight.

You need a business plan. I personally prefer to relocate to Odessa, Tx or Midland, Tx in order to get an oilfield tanker position. The pay is great and the stress is less than the owner operator/lease operator thing.

Owner operator/lease operator is good if you have a husband and wife team.

Owner Operator:

An owner-operator is a driver who either owns or leases the truck they are driving. A self-employed driver.

If you drive for FFE Oilfield Tanker, you make much more money than you do as a Lease Operator. You can make $75000 per year. The pay hourly $22 and they promise to give the drivers 10 hour driving time per day. You just need to be willing to relocate. This is the sacrifice.
