I know not too many will be able to answer this question but if i remember correctly a few members have experience. I'm in my 3rd day on a 13 and I'm picking it up for the most part. At least I think I am. Anyways main question is downshifting. For example im in 8 high going to 8 low what is the proper way to do so? And am i still dropping to to 1000 rpms Thanks.

Flip the splitter down, ease off the throttle and let it shift itself or just downshift to 7 high.. not much difference.

Matt George and Big Jon have two videos on YouTube on it.

Thanks Packrat and thank you Susan. So Susan can you do the same for upshifting? 7 high to 8 high for example?

Yes. Once you get the range selector up and can start splitting gears you can go from any low gear to any low gear or any high gear to any high gear. Splitting is an option but not required. I drive an 18 speed daily and the only time I need to split gears is if I'm loaded heavy and starting out on a hill or climbing a hill in higher gears. It helps build momentum when starting on a hill and keep momentum if you need to downshift climbing a hill.

Thank You Minnis that is exactly what I was trying to figure out. One driver told me splitting gears is "low boy stuff" but tool that with a grain of salt.

That’s it right there. Great explanation, Minnie B.

In class we were taught to to drive the 13 as a 10-speed with overdrive. Worked pretty well. Did a bit of splitting other gears (like 7 and 8), up and down. Pretty fun and I can see where with a heavy load it would help but mostly 10-13 and 13-10 on the highway was awesome.
