I bought one today, haven’t heard a word on it. Lol
You will often go all day or even several days without hearing anything. It's a misconception that there's constant chatter. Quite the opposite, actually.
The first time you hear a report of an accident ahead blocking three lanes of traffic however, you'll thank yourself for having it on.
Make sure it's set up properly. Rf gain, SWR, squelch all play a role in your reception and transmission. It's worth the relatively small cost of having a CB shop hook you up if you're not sure what to do.
After buying a GPS, my second purchase was a CB. Cobra 29LTD Classic. IMHO having a CB should be mandatory. Especially out west in the mountains. It's a safety thing.
Only place I actually turn it off is Wells NV. Anyone that's gone through there knows what I'm talking about. Just not what the radio waves should be used for.
Me and CBs go way back. My Granddad had a base station with all the bells and whistles. Amplifier, motorized directional antenna. He'd talk skip across the world! Was it legal? Nope! If the FCC would have caught him there'd been hell to pay! Call sign was KBQ9195.
