I just started school this past Saturday the 18th. (weekend student) I know graduation is 9 weeks away but I have been doing a lot of research on different carriers. I think I've narrowed it down to the three I really want to concentrate on the most, Schneider, Trans Am and Roehl. I will apply with other carriers just in case none of these work out. I am concerned with one thing though, my knees, I spent a lot of years putting down carpet and other floor coverings, crawling around under houses and other construction related duties. (Too hard headed to wear knee pads) I don't have a problem walking or climbing, my problems come from squatting and crawling. How or will this affect my pre employment physical assessment? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated....

Do yourself a really big favor and talk to drivers from Trans Am. Not the company but the drivers. Might change your mind slightly.

There are some companies, especially flatbed companies, that will have their own little set of physical tests they'd like you to do to make sure you can move properly and lift the required weight to do your everyday job. Most companies don't have anything like that though. So passing the DOT physical won't be any problem for you, but passing a company physical might be at some places.

Long before you actually accept a job somewhere you can find out what their physical requirements are. Crawling isn't something you'll have to do a lot of, but you'll be squatting down to walk under the trailer for inspections regardless of the type of freight you haul.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
