So here is my excuse, So back in August I transferred my CDLA from Florida to West Virginia, No test no eye exam no nothing, although I have a restriction on my CDL about corrective lenses the eye doc said it doesn't affect my ability to operate safely. WV Couldn't give me a regular CDL because of the veteran status? Didn't make sense to me, So I had to wait two weeks to get a federal CDL some how it's different than others. has a gold star instead of grey. Anyway, During the process of transferring They took my Valid and current Medical card and made copies sent to Charleston etc etc. Now do I have to re register with them?

Now the complicated part. In September I had to a leave of my job due to my mothers failing health. So I turned my truck in and drove from WV down to Florida. She passed Sept. 30th and since then being the eldest child, I have the awesome responsibility of all the legal BS involved in a death. So there is no way I can drive up to WV and Hand them my med card.

Now if I transfer my CDLA back to Florida seeing as how this will probably be my New place of Residence. (all my family is here and my younger sister who is taking it rough) So I'm firmly planted here. Since it's been 5 months do I have to retake all the test and what about the medical card and the revoking ability of the DMV. I've been calling all day and getting the run around, can't get a straight answer. Will Florida just do what WV did and reissue me a FL CDLA with a restriction? or will I have to go through all the testing again?

I know it's a multiple question post and last minute but No one in my family is a driver so I literately found out from a facebook post from my company on their wall. ANY advice would help and I will be grateful.

Thank y'all and stay safe

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

I wish I could help but I don't know the answer to that because it's state-specific. Every state indeed makes their own rules about transferring licenses so it will all depend on Florida's policies.

But nowadays most states require you to have a valid medical card before you can get your license. And ya know, a DOT physical is something you can get on your own from a hospital or qualified doctor for under $100 most of the time. So with the situation you're in it might be easier to get a valid DOT physical in Florida and transfer your license back to Florida from West Virginia. But you want to check with Florida first because some states accept transfers from other states, some states don't. Illinois for instance does not accept any transfers whatsoever. If you're transferring your license into Illinois you have to take all of the CDL testing over again, including the driving, backing, and pre-trip inspection.

Pre-trip Inspection:

A pre-trip inspection is a thorough inspection of the truck completed before driving for the first time each day.

Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. Federal and state inspectors also may inspect your vehicles. If they judge a vehicle to be unsafe, they will put it “out of service” until it is repaired.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.
