Getting paid per diem means getting a portion of your salary paid to you without taxes taken out. It's technically classified as a meal and expense reimbursement.

With the new tax code - Per Diem is NO LONGER CONSIDERED TAXABLE INCOME.
Under the old code - you had to claim it, then deduct it out in itemization.
New it IS actually "free money " ( or at least TAX FREE MONEY).
It WILL reduce your W-2 Taxable income, and also your SS/Med deductions. Lower W-2 income, will reduce your gross (important for loans, credit, etc.).
So, for a W-2 Employee Company Driver, Per Diem would no longer be claimed/deducted. For a Lease/OO you CAN (and WOULD) want to deduct, along with other expenses that are no longer deductible for "employees".
