I live in the Chicago area and I have been looking for a trucking job, the problem I'm having is my record is jacked up. I've had two accidents and two moving violations in the pass three years. I just wanted to know if anybody knows of any jobs that will hire?

This in a CMV or your personal vehicle? All I can think to say is make the phone calls to find out.

CMV:

Commercial Motor Vehicle

A CMV is a vehicle that is used as part of a business, is involved in interstate commerce, and may fit any of these descriptions:

  • Weighs 10,001 pounds or more
  • Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more
  • Is designed or used to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) not for compensation
  • Is designed or used to transport 9 or more passengers (including the driver) for compensation
  • Is transporting hazardous materials in a quantity requiring placards

In general, your on the line of being disqualified. One more mishap and I don't think you have a chance. Most companies probably won't touch you, but you need to find that one company who will give you a chance. We can't do it here for you. You need to call every company out there and submit an application. You'll get denied on most of them, but keep you hopes up that one will take you. You must seriously be in contact with at least 15 different companies.

You can't be picky, whoever will give you a chance you should be grateful and gladly accept the opportunity. So contact companies and speak with their recruiters.

As a side note, your area helps a lot. There is a lot of demand for drivers in the Chicago area so definitely have that to your advantage. Try looking for companies on Craigslist as well.

I gotta ask, what the heck are you doing getting into so much trouble in only three years. I don't mean to be rude, but make 100% sure you're ready for this because mistakes in a truck could easily get innocent people killed. Trucks are a whole lot more difficult to maneuver and operate safely. Make sure you've grown up mentally from your troubled pasted. Just trying to make sure you know what you're trying to get yourself into, this isn't a car - and accidents and traffic violations are much much more serious and deadly in a CMV.

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

The short answer is no. In the eyes of insurance companies your record speaks for itself. Two accidents AND two moving violations screams Aggressive driver and millions in claims from whatever you get caught doing.

You will more than likely have to wait till that stuff is off your record before anyone will touch you. Takes three years for everything to come off.

Almost every company I have see says no more than two moving violations in three years and no more than two accidents in three years and here you have both of them at the upper limit of what a company will want. One incident and you would be fired and the company would loose any investment they tried to make in you.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

My first accident I was sick with walking pneumonia and passed out at the wheel and ran into a ditch, and second one a four wheeler was playing around in front my truck, after a mile or so he slams on brakes and I ran into him. the crazy thing about that was the state trooper had someone else pulled over and when he got to our accident he looked at his dash cam and seen the other driver mistakes and give him the ticket. The guy took it to court and they said i was at fault because by law he has the right to slow down even after showing the judge that everybody was floored. I not a rookie, I've been a truck driver for 25 years and those accidents were the first I ever had in a truck. I retired after that but now I'm bored and want to get back in the business.

I haven't started looking yet just asking. The company I was last with didn't fire me after second accident, I retired because the business has turned so ugly. I guess I'll stay retired then.

Thanks for the help/comments

Here is the way insurance companies will look at it and i keep mentioning them cause they tell the trucking companies who they can and can not hire.

1)You were so sick that you passed out. If you are that sick you can be placed out of service by the dot but of course you knew that and choose to drive anyway wrecking the truck in a ditch.

2) You saw the four wheeler playing games for over a mile and yet somehow instead of slowing down and removing yourself from the situation you continued to drive close enough that his actions pulled you into an accident and since you ended up rear ending him that means you were follow to close.

See how this looks to companies? Not trying to get on you but i was saying that is the way insurance companies will look at it.

In both cases they were preventable accidents. The word 'Preventable' is what will keep you out of a truck.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

I was Swift Driver...at the time of my accident my wife was going through chemo therapy and shes disabled and alone with 2 of my grand daughtrs (13 & 14) My daughter and my wife were hit by a straight truck carring full load of batteries...she was stopped at a light...the driver was texting and slammed into her at 45 MPH. Killing my daughter...that was last year...my daughter was driving her to the hospital for her chemo treatments... All of this was a huge overwhelming mental Cluster F%%$k... because she was disabled I she could not work...we needed an income...I drove tankers 10 yrs previous...my older bother passed away ...and I offered to help his family by taking over his business, delivering computer cell phone parts to local shops...the business failed to make a good profit. With my wife not working...returned to driving OTR...after graduating from Road Masters Tampa...I went right to work for Swift. Well things got worse at home...I was distracted mentally ...the first incident (Which should not been reported since there was no damage or police reports) I backed over a rain gutter down spout laying on the ground on my blind side...the second one was backing up At TA at night I bumped a truckers trailer but no damage...the trucker was angry that he threatened me with a hammer...I applogised and ask if we could work this out since there was no damage...he insisted to file a report...police came and no citations were given..the HWP aske did he really want to file a report since there was no violations...He said...He was getting even with Swift for being fired 2 years ago..and he was going to get a attorney and sue there pants off. I thought I was OK by doing the right thing reporting these incidents...but No Good Deed Goes Unpunished...so now trucking companys will not hire me because of those 2 incident...I had a 98.5% On time delivery and pick up rating... guess that does mean anything either...now it is very bleak for finances...life really sucks and not sure why I should continue on dealing with this failure...

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
