I'm glad the guy got what was coming to him, he was a coward. Thanks for the link!
As long as we're going this way (for one thread). Keep in mind - SCOTUS has found that cops are under NO LEGAL OBLIGATION to take a bullet for anyone.
Also keep in mind, I'm a local to this incident, and have many friends that are actively serving BSO. They are NOT COWARDS. They are good guys, doing a dangerous and largely unappreciated job, most for LESS THAN WE MAKE AS DRIVERS (at least until they make rank of have decades of service). They walk out of their homes with a target on their backs, and have NO IDEA whether or not they'll get home on any given day. And they were PO'd at how and why this went down - and the fact that the higher ups in command took ZERO RESPONSIBILITY (as evidenced by a vote of NO CONFIDENCE against the Sheriff by the rank and file - and yet he still stayed on and FORCED HIMSELF TO BE FIRED).
So yes - while his job was to protect the kids in his school - his actual job (under the rules of BC Schools and the "Promise Program") his job was to "deter by visible presence", befriend and give a positive perception of law enforcement.
This was an "out to pasture" gig - the guy was just getting his last months in before a full pension retirement. Parkland is in a really nice upscale neighborhood and a nice upper-middle-class high school. The last place you'd expect a violent incident to take place. Though the reality is - it could have happened ANYWHERE.
While the publicly stated policy (according to since fired Sheriff Scott Israel - a REAL POS), says you run into danger to try and at least give people a chance to escape - the "off the record policy" is to establish a perimeter, assess the situation and wait for SWAT/backup to arrive.
It's easy to "monday morning quarterback" this thing and say "I would have run in", or "it was his job to run in". Nor am I saying that he isn't a coward for NOT RUNNING IN REGARDLESS OF POLICY OR RISK.
The cops that DID BREACH initially, were from Coral Springs PD (neighboring city), and many of them had THEIR OWN KIDS in the school - so you could see why they were so eager to get in there - as opposed to the SRO who may or may not have been instructed to hold back (and there's still questionable radio comms where the "tape broke", and the recordings are questionable).
This whole thing was a TRAVESTY that created a TRAGEDY. And as angry as I am in how this was handled by the deputy and the entire BSO command (especially for the shortcomings that allowed this to happen in the first place, and how it was POLITICIZED in the aftermath), I think Peterson was OVERCHARGED. "Neglect of a Child With Great Bodily Harm" - is inappropriate, and in light of court rulings on the role of police, any conviction would probably be overturned. "Culpable Negligence" is the appropriate charge.
This is ALL POLITICAL SCAPEGOATISM. Peterson is the sacrificial lamb - where they are many in the chain of command, that share equal or greater responsibility in the incident.
Same goes for the shooter - Cruz. He came out of the gate, offering to plead to all the charges in exchange for taking the DP off the table. He's still sitting waiting trial, it will be a high profile public circus - ginning up anger to get the jury to do a DP (which must be unanimous), which will take endless appeals and more resources - and the kid will be an old man if they ever get to put the needle in him. All sentences to run consecutively with no chance of parole is fine. Screw the bloodlust. Unless you setup the gallows in front of the courthouse and let him jerk from the rope right there.
Not even going to get into all the conspiracy theories that were floated (false flag, active shooter drill gone bad, mind control drugs, etc.). Or the cries from the left on "how many have to die before you'll give up your guns?", or blaming the NRA, or making that little tool David Hogg a media star.
So you can yell and get angry and claim victory for "Peterson The Coward" getting charged and being the scapegoat for a system that failed all the way up and down the line.
This thread should either DISAPPEAR, since it is entirely off topic for what this site is about - or be archived as a demonstration of what WE DON'T TALK ABOUT HERE.
While it's good to have a place to "blow off steam", blow it off about the TRUCKING INDUSTRY.
Rick
The Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) is a person who evaluates employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation and makes recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare.
Electric APUs have started gaining acceptance. These electric APUs use battery packs instead of the diesel engine on traditional APUs as a source of power. The APU's battery pack is charged when the truck is in motion. When the truck is idle, the stored energy in the battery pack is then used to power an air conditioner, heater, and other devices
There was recently a thread on here about the program where truckers take their trucks to schools. Maybe one of you guys can repost that discussion. If I was still driving, I would try to get involved in that program. In this day and age, kids need all the positive influence and reinforcement they can get. So, there is one really relevant connection between schools and trucking.

I'm a very opinionated person and I have a lot to say about this particular issue. But I chose to keep my mouth shut. Goes against everything I believe cuz when I die I'm going to freak everyone out laying in my casket as they view my cold dead body....I'm going to start spewing all the crap I kept in, on an audio tape... should be an interesting funeral...
Ill bite...
Here's how i look at it. I haven't had the time or energy to research the officers career or how long exactly he had been an officer for but i think it was lengthy. At this moment i have no idea what kind of career he had up to this terrible incident but who knows ot could of been an outstanding career, he could of saved a kid from a burning building for all we know. Would you still call him a coward? Because heres the thing like Rick said too many factors or variables here. School resource officer is typically a finish your career job. This officer thoughts were probably counting down his days left, while working a school in a nice neighborhood. This wasn't supposed to happen.
But Brian HE WAS A SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER he was supposed to protect those kids!!! Yes he was but i would like to know whens the last time he even shot his service weapon let alone had any tactical training or active shooter training. And even then lets say as soon as he heard shots fired he ran it. Than what??? Kids are running around everywhere, complete chasos he starts returning fire hits a kid in the head. Now what? "Why didnt he wait for back up"???? You can armchair quarterback this all day just too may factors at play in my opinion. Things just happen so fast in situations like this sure you can say what you would LIKE to do but you simply do not know until you are in it.
So im not ready to call him a flat out coward just yet. The entire Department needs to be in the mix. And what's the answer? No idea but that's for law enforcement officials to figure out. And i also agree he is being over punished. Give him something yes what not Sure. But this is something that will likely haunt him for the rest of his life.

Guess us women aren’t the only moody ones!
i was thinking the same
I worked for 27 years in a different profession before I became a driver. I know the history of the response protocols. I know how they have evolved and continue to evolve. I know from personal and professional experience how difficult it is to get people in that profession trained - multiple demands on their time, reticence on the part of the assignment location or personal choice to attend, apathy or "wont happen here ergo not important" mindset.
I would share my opinions, experience, and qualifications to make these statements, however... This is Trucking Truth. I voice those opinions on FarceBook. Or on my blog page. Not here.
Any outcome is still tragic for all involved. Peace.

I worked as a customer service doorman at a local Irish pub for a year. We had a rule for staff discussions. No Politics. No Religion. If it works in an Irish Pub (some of the most politically charged and religiously impacted people on the planet) it probably should work here. I like the idea of archiving with a heading "Thou Shalt Not Open This Box of Pandora"
