OK well thanks to Brett and his site, I've done my research as well as talked to a friend or two who drives a truck for a living. One thing for sure is that I know the the two companies that I want to join on with as far as a Company sponsored school, but I haven't had much luck getting a hold of knight and prime is sorta calling me nonstop. I'd rather join on with knight considering all the positive things on the forums here I've been reading, but also thought of prime and heard they have flatbed and tankers which really interests me.
I guess what I am asking is; should I go with a dry van or refrigerated company until my school dues are paid and then switch to a flatbed or tanker carrier. Or should I just suck it up and try my luck with Prime, who offers all that already.
Just for the record, Knight has refrigerated as well.
I presently drive for Prime in the flatbed division. I have also done reefer in the past for them as well. Any questions, let me know. I will do my best to answer them or point you in the right direction if I can.

A refrigerated trailer.
From what I hear Prime has a waiting list for their Flatbed fleet.

Not so (at least not back in Aug when I switched). I have not heard that about the flatbed since I have been here. I started with Prime in Oct of 2011.

Yeah now a days i'm not sure but back in September of 2012 I spoke to a driver going through orientation at Melton and he came over cause the Prime flatbed fleet had a wait list so he didn't wanna wait. but you are probably right. seeing as flatbed company's constantly lose drivers due to weather and injuries so after the required experience needed dry van drivers could probably switch right to the Flatbed fleet over there.
Also, what kind of Flatbeds does Prime use? just the normal open decks or do yall have step decks and RGN?
Id say if flatbed is what you want to do then go for it with Prime. I went with Knight, and have been very happy so far. In fact I leave again tomorrow morning to pick up a 600 mile run to PA then am already preplanned to pick up a load from there for 1000 miles down to Florida. God I cant wait to get out of this cold weather LOL.
As I'm sure you have already been told, you just have to look at what each of the companies offers and figure out which one fits you best. For me home time options was huge and a big part of why I chose Knight. But if the home time, pay scale, type of freight, and all the other variables seem like a better fit with Prime then that is who you need to go with.
Remember you need to stay with that first company a year, so if flat bed is where you want to be you might be kicking yourself in a couple months when your pulling that big box behind you
Have you looked at Roehl? They have a flatbed division. The reefer division is out of Arizona so unless you live out there, it is not an option. Of course, they have dry van as well.
A refrigerated trailer.
Roehl's flatbed division has all the various types of trailers. They have openings all the time it seems. The refer division is mainly in Arizona, but we got them all over. They are mostly live loads which I hate, but that's just me.

We have 48' open deck, some 48' step deck (in fact I have one of just about 12 or so that are left), and 53' step decks.

Dry Van:
A trailer or truck that that requires no special attention, such as refrigeration, that hauls regular palletted, boxed, or floor-loaded freight. The most common type of trailer in trucking.
