I have issues with roundabouts, I think they are great!
I do like round-a-bouts, but in a roundabout way. Lol
I have to say that the "circle" intersections Rainy illustrated look like a real nightmare. Can we just sell New Jersey to China?
I saw some in Arizona where trucks simply can not fit so there are a bunch of tire tracks over it.
Believe it or not, it was a truck rollover in one of the Wickenburg, AZ, roundabouts last week that gave me the idea to do an article on roundabouts.
When I was driving, I became intimately familiar with that particular Wickenburg roundabout. I was heading up to I-40 from Phoenix on 60 and accidentally squirted out the wrong roundabout exit. Instead of continuing north on 93 I ended up going west on 60. Right after the first stop light the road goes under a 13'9" railroad bridge. I sat at that light for a long time pondering, because for the life of me I couldn't remember if I had a 13'6" trailer or a 14-footer.
Cars were honking all around me. I finally took a guess and proceeded about as slow as my 90-year-old Mom with her walker. I made it through.
I absolutely did not want to make a U-turn and do that again to get back on the right highway, so I continued on 60 until I could turn north. It was a 40-mile detour ... on my own dime, probably ... but well worth it.
Roundabouts have become very popular in Wisconsin and elsewhere. I actually like them. All the newer ones are designed with trucks/trailers taken into consideration. They have the "truck aprons", as Rainy noted and it's perfectly acceptable to run your tandems up on the apron. In a truck, I navigate through them VERY SLOWLY and as G-Town says, ALWAYS WATCH YOUR WAGON while in a roundabout. And never worry about other drivers getting irritated. Our sole mission is to navigate these roundabouts safely.
True Dat!
In some places they just got a bit carried away with them. I will post one of my favorites in a bit.
Some (mostly on highways, truck routes) are designed for trucks... others not. Need to use both lanes. Was taught to put flashers on. Trucks have the ROW in them in WI but few know that and no one cares!
A set of axles spaced close together, legally defined as more than 40 and less than 96 inches apart by the USDOT. Drivers tend to refer to the tandem axles on their trailer as just "tandems". You might hear a driver say, "I'm 400 pounds overweight on my tandems", referring to his trailer tandems, not his tractor tandems. Tractor tandems are generally just referred to as "drives" which is short for "drive axles".

5 Round abouts in less than a mile!
5 Round abouts in less than a mile!
The crazy thing is the speed limit in between them is like 55 mph or something... as if!
Another Fav. Take 2!
