Phantom

Glad your driving is going well. My Son is in "maybe" his 5th month solo with Wilson's. He loves it, dragging a reefer around this great country. I try to get him on this site, since I am the one who told him this job might be good for him. He hasn't been back out to the northeast since he left for school in February. He is taking some home time sometime this month. As with all things, your current situation will pass. Just stay focused and be safe

Making miles in bunches. Home to Pittsburg, then upstate New York, down to Jacksonville, up to the ATL, then back to PA. They’re keeping us loaded and moving. That’s good because we’re kinda racing the clock. My trainer has a wedding to go to in Vegas the second week in November. I’ve actually been invited, but that’s a week down and I can’t afford the loss. It’s a coin flip if I’ll make my solo week by then.

On a lighter note. You’ve heard of Elf on the Shelf? My trainer invented Suck on the truck.

How does the CDL road test go? Is it through a local DMV office or is it given directly by the company?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

Both Springfield and Missoula have certified CDL test examiners now for onsite testing. Trust me, I know these folks and they are tougher the the state examiners...
