Day 1: Orientation

Day 1 went down without a hitch. I got started this morning at 7:30AM at the Crete terminal. I took a urine drug test at the terminal. The results should be back within 48 hours. I will then be moved to hired status, and set up with a trainer. I then proceeded down the road to the clinic for a DOT physical and company pre-work screen. You can view the Pre-Work Screen on YouTube. I came back to the terminal afterwards and watched 3 training videos. They were about 25 minutes a piece and consisted of 2 hazmat videos, and a hours of service video. I had a short interview/introduction with the fleet manager. I also had plenty of paperwork to fill out throughout the day. Mainly benefits and company policy kinda stuff. They provided lunch while at the terminal. It consisted of a sandwich, chips, cookie, and coke. The also gave me a $10 restaurant gift card for supper. I have been in a company provided hotel room since last night. I arrived back at my room around 3:30PM. It has a king size bed, microwave, mini fridge, tv, safe, wifi, and work desk. It is in a great location next door to the local mall. I should be here tomorrow night and then leave out with a trainer the next day. It has been an enjoyable stay, except for tornado warnings last night! I will update you on tomorrows excitement as soon as possible. If you have any questions then please feel free to ask!

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Fleet Manager:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

GA_Rookie... do you know if Crete accepts ONLY the schools listed within their website, or are they open to accept other schools not listed within their website?

I wanted to shoot them an email to inquire but couldn't find an email anywhere on their site.

The issue is that I live way up here in Vermont, we have two CDL schools but neither are listed on their website, and financially, I can't go to any of the schools listed on their website, too far away and more expensive (although the two schools here are NOT cheep either, but it's "doable")

Thanks.

God bless and be safe.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Hey bigdubber....I too have been curious to know the answer to that very same question. So I sent them an email (I found a link on their website) and got a reply some weeks later. Be advised....my response was tailored to my state (SC) and situation, so I'd encourage you to search the website for that email link and ask them about any school you've been considering, as your state and situation would most likely be different from mine.

For me, the answer was no, there were no other schools outside of the 2 listed on the website that I could attend with hopes of getting on with Crete. Both are technical colleges. One is even highly accredited within SC.

Well, word of mouth about the benefits of driving for Crete (spoke to 2 guys who were team drivers @ my local Flyin' J) made driving for this company my primary goal. After following up with both schools, I'm headed to York Technical College in Rock Hill as soon as I can scrape together the last bit of $ for tuition.

I get the cost concern you have, but as I've re-searched trucking schools, I've found the tech school option is often cheaper. The level of education they'd provide would be unmatched. They're held to a higher standard of instruction by the state than your average private school. And the have multiple funding options (WIA, local and state grants, etc.) Check them out in depth where you live...maybe surprised by how they can help you. Some of those mentioned funding options may even help with cost of gas to attend.

Times are hard and most folks can only do what's affordable...but if you CAN find the means, I'd go for it. Best of luck to you.

GA Rookie....please keep those updates coming. I'm locked on to this thread and eager to read more as you get further in the process.

PS. Kudos to you Brett. Truly a top notch forum. Heads above the other "trucker's report" sites I used to follow. Long time lurker, first time poster.

An edit to my recent post.....

Apparently, That email link on the Crete website is gone. Should have checked before posting, sorry about that.

However, if it's appropriate to do so, I have the guys email I dealt with in my address book that I can give ya.

Is there a PM feature on this site yet?
