I just wanted to bring this entry out of the dust on page 9. I don't really see much about Crete on the forum. If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask!

I should be going to Shaffer orientation the middle of May. What items do you recommend taking with you to orientation and post time with the trainer? Also, I've heard mixed responses on Shaffer/Crete allowing inverters or inverters being included on their trucks.

OWI:

We have multiple topics on Items To Pack. Just click the link for more details. Crete/Shaffer does not include inverters on the truck. They allow you to have an in inverter up to 450 watts.

I mistated the facts! They only allow 400 watt inverters...

Crete's Inverter Policy for Company Trucks:

Only a 400 watt or less inverter that plugs into a power outlet is allowed to be used on Company equipment. Under certain circumstances involving health related reasons, the Company will allow a driver providing written consent to install a larger inverter. The larger inverter must be compatible with the Company's equipment as determined by the AMS staff. The inverter may only be installed by staff at designated AMS facilities.

Instances that warrant installation of a larger inverter would be medical reasons, such as sleep apnea , diabetes, etc., requiring electrical accessories to control or monitor the medical condition. However, it should be noted that not all medical related accessories require an inverter. 12-volt outlet isolation may be all that is necessary as opposed to the need for a larger inverter. AMS will determine the proper modification or the need for an inverter based on the power specifications of the medical need accessories.

If you have a medical condition requiring an inverter in excess of 400 watts, please contact your Fleet Manager to start the review and approval process.

Sleep Apnea:

A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.

In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.

It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.

Fleet Manager:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Thanks for the info. I was primarily looking to have an inverter big enough to power a microwave, but at 400 watts that wouldn't be possible.

GA_Rookie... do you know if Crete accepts ONLY the schools listed within their website, or are they open to accept other schools not listed within their website?

I wanted to shoot them an email to inquire but couldn't find an email anywhere on their site.

The issue is that I live way up here in Vermont, we have two CDL schools but neither are listed on their website, and financially, I can't go to any of the schools listed on their website, too far away and more expensive (although the two schools here are NOT cheep either, but it's "doable")

Thanks.

God bless and be safe.

OK i know this post is old but i figured i would just let anyone know who was interested as i just found out... crete normally only accepts drivers from their approved school list however after talking with a recruiter if you are former military with a honorable discharge you are not restricted to the CDL school list on their website and on top of that instead of starting out at the normal rate you start at 42 CPM and so long as you still have benifits left on your G.I. Bill Crete is a part of the Military Apprentiship program witch pays you BAH on top of your normal pay for one year then when the year is up you get a certification as a DOT professional driver or somthing like that. because of the higher starting pay im begining to look more at the van side of trucking than flat bed as with flatbed i really really want to go with TMC but unless they are hiring in Norfolk when i finish school at the end of september i will not be able to go with TMC. anyway just thought i would throw that little bit of info in there for any vets thinking of trucking and looking for a good company. BTW i know that TMC, Melton, and Crete/Shaffer are a part of the apprenticship program but not shur of any other companies that are.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

CPM:

Cents Per Mile

Drivers are often paid by the mile and it's given in cents per mile, or cpm.

YW. yeah i know that would be cool. the recruiter i talked too said they only have a few of those so i would think getting one would be seniority rather than just if its available.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.
